Wild Rice Program
The NHBP Environmental Department oversees the restoration, management and inventory of Wild Rice production on the Pine Creek Indian Reservation. Wild Rice grows in shallow streams and flooded fields, and is harvested by maneuvering a canoe into a section of Wild Rice plants, bending the grain heads and tapping the plant so as to thresh the seeds into the canoe.
The department also hosts Wild Rice Wednesday and Wild Rice Camp in the fall. Wild Rice Wednesday consists of a meal for the entire NHBP Community and an opportunity to learn the history of Wild Rice. Wild Rice Camp is open to the Community and is a two-day camp that teaches participants how to manage and oversee the production of Wild Rice.
