Phineas Pamptopee, who had been chief for 50 years, died in 1914. The selected chief for the next ten years was his youngest son, Stephen Pamptopee. Steven became chief through designation by his father; he served for a ten-year period that ended in 1924. Steven was seldom photographed and was known for his retiring and mild disposition. He lived his entire life on the reservation and died suddenly of heart trouble in 1926 at 47 years old (Rodwan & Anewishki, 2009, p. 23).
