1. Cooking Classes June 10 – Pine Creek | June 18 – Grand Rapids
Tie up your aprons, Tribal Members. NHBP will help you create some delectable dinners with our summer cooking series Dishes for Diabetes. This course will teach you cooking skills to help manage and prevent type 2 diabetes in a hands-on environment. Classes occur in-person at both the Pine Creek and Grand Rapids community centers through August.

Not feeling up to in-person cooking lessons? Do you have some weird kitchen quirks that should really only be seen by your pets and immediate family members? Great! NHBP is offering a virtual Zoom cooking class. All ingredients needed to craft this delicious and nutritious meal will be delivered to your doorsteps. All you need is a kitchen, 21st century capabilities (i.e., your smartphone, tablet or laptop) and the internet. Register by June 18!

Are you ready and excited for this year’s Light Up the Rez Turtle Trot and 5k? Because we are! Be sure to social distance during the event, but no face mask is required. Register ahead of time to avoid unnecessary contact and long wait times to sign in and get your gear. Elders Trip to Grand Rapids Public Museum June 14 or 15 Tribal Elders, the Grand Rapids Public Museum is redesigning their exhibit on Anishinabek culture and are seeking your valued input going forward. The exhibit, titled “Anishinabek: The People of This Place,” includes Anishinabek decorative arts, clothing, weapons, tools and interviews with Anishinabe from the area. Tribal Elders can visit the museum free of charge either June 14 or 15 and offer their feedback about changes, updates or general suggestions regarding the exhibit. Justice for Nangonhs Protest A peaceful protest will be held Tuesday, June 22, to demand justice for Nangonhs Massey, a 21-year-old Indigenous woman who was found murdered. The protest will be held outside of the courthouse located at 231 W. Lafayette Boulevard where preliminary hearings in her murder trial are set to commence in Detroit. Participants are asked to wear red in honor of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. “Custer Falls Again” Rally A “Custer Falls Again” rally is scheduled for Friday, June 25, at the Custer Monument, located at Elm Avenue and North Monroe Street in Monroe, Michigan. NHBP Healthcare Program Coverage Level – Satisfaction Survey In a 2020 survey regarding the NHBP Healthcare program, about half of those surveyed did not feel that the allowable benefit max met Tribal Member needs. To help us determine what additional benefit levels are needed, we are seeking further information from NHBP Tribal Membership.
