The definition of food insecurity is having a lack of reliable access to healthy food. Food insecurity can be a temporary or long-term problem for those who experience it. Food insecurity can affect anyone, and there are specific and adverse health effects that come from chronic food insecurity. For example, those facing food insecurity are more likely to eat high-carbohydrate and high-fat diets compared to a balanced meal that those with food security have access to.

Furthermore, food insecurity often affects the iron status of children, leading to anemia. Those who face chronic food insecurity are at a higher risk of developing obesity. This phenomenon is called the hunger-obesity paradox. If you or someone you know is facing food insecurity, NHBP is here to help. FeedingAmerica.org is also a great resource for learning more about food insecurity.
