Fatty liver disease used to only be seen in people with excessive alcohol use. However, Non-Alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is being diagnosed more and more each year. What is NAFLD? NAFLD is a build-up of excess fat in the liver in people who do not consume alcohol in excess. For the majority of the population, NAFLD is seen in people who also are diagnosed with one or more of the following; type 2 diabetes, obesity, chronic kidney disease, and/or cardiovascular disease. NAFLD is a new area of research, so there is more and more information on how to treat and prevent this condition every day. Currently, the main treatment and prevention strategies include frequent physical activity, decreasing added sugar intake, and increasing fiber intake.
