What’s Happening on The Rez: 5k Turtle Trot, Pow Wow Nights, and More!

It’s time for your mid-month update from The Rez. It’s 40 degrees in the sun, and it’s a good day to be Indigenous. We’re kicking off a new way to keep our Tribal Members up-to-date with bi-weekly posts that will include goings-on around The Rez and information to keep you in the loop. Whether you’re close to home or far from it, check the KOTI blog the second and fourth week of every month to stay in the know!


Upcoming Events

Cooking Classes

May 13 – Pine Creek | May 21 – Grand Rapids

  • Tie up your aprons, Tribal Members. NHBP will help you create some delectable dinners with our summer cooking series Dishes for Diabetes. This course will teach you cooking skills to help manage and prevent type 2 diabetes in a hands-on environment. Classes occur in-person at both the Pine Creek and Grand Rapids community centers through August.

May 28 – Virtual

  • Not feeling up to in-person cooking lessons? Do you have some weird kitchen quirks that should really only be seen by your pets and immediate family members? Great! NHBP is also offering a virtual Zoom cooking class. All ingredients needed to craft this delicious and nutritious meal will be delivered to your doorsteps. All you need is a kitchen, 21st century capabilities (i.e., your smartphone, tablet or laptop) and the internet.

COVID-19 Drive-Thru Vaccine Clinic

May 15

NHBP Health and Human Services, the Village of Athens and Athens Fire Department will be offering a drive-thru COVID-19 vaccine clinic, 9 a.m. to noon at the Athens Township Fire Department. No appointment necessary! Click here for more information.

Grand Rapids Pow Wow Night

May 17

Missing out on cultural connection but still want to safely practice social distancing? Join NHBP for a Pow Wow Night outside at Riverside Park Island Pavilion in Grand Rapids at 5:30 p.m. This event will be limited to 25 people and masks are required! Memorial Day Celebration

May 31

NHBP’s annual Memorial Day Celebration will take place at the cemetery flag pole on the Pine Creek Reservation at 3 p.m. to commemorate fallen soldiers. Light Up the Rez 5k & Turtle Trot

We’re gearing up for our annual Light Up the Rez 5k and Turtle Trot, are you? With 49 days left to shed the winter slumber from our muscles, there’s plenty of time to get in the swing of it. Whether you’re a seasoned marathon runner, just wanting to try something new or looking to cheer someone on from the sidelines, this is a fun community event. Though we won’t be able to celebrate in person this year, our annual event to honor Wshkebnojisek {newborns} born in March 2019 to March 2021 is live on both the NHBP Facebook page and Members Only website today. Please join us in saying bozho {hello} to the next generation!

Everbridge Instant Alerts

Who doesn’t love free stuff? NHBP is giving away FIVE gift baskets to Tribal Members who download the Everbridge Instant Alert App and change their preferences to only receive notifications via the mobile app in the month of May. Winners will be announced in June!

VITA Tax Program

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NHBP VITA program is offering a drop-off procedure to assist Tribal Members in completing their 2020 income taxes. Don’t forget – Monday, May 17 is the last day for appointments! Contact Rebecca Griffin at rebecca.griffin@nhbp-nsn.gov or 269.704.8371!

Air Monitor Giveaway

Medication Dropbox

Unsure of what to do with your unused or expired prescription medication? Don’t flush or throw them away! A dropbox is now available inside the foyer at the NHBP Tribal Police Department.

NHBP Entrepreneurship Training Program

We know COVID has made things challenging for business communities big and small, old and new, but it’s never too late to learn something new.

  • Check out our online Entrepreneurship Training Program available through the Members Only website. With over 20 hours of material pertaining to seven tracks of focus, the course is rich with information on how to start and run your own business.
